Kipohtakaw Seeds of Learning School Garden

The Kipohtakaw Seeds of Learning Garden is a collaborative project between Alexander First Nation Education, the Kipohtakaw Education Centre, and Ciclomanias. The initiative transforms school grounds into a Food Forest and learning garden that strengthens food security, supports land-based education, and enhances community well-being.

Rooted in Traditional Indigenous Ecological Knowledge and regenerative design, the garden integrates practices such as composting, permaculture, rainwater harvesting, and native plant cultivation. Designed as a living classroom, it brings together students, teachers, Elders, and community members to learn, grow, and reconnect with the land.

Building on the success of the First Nations Zero Waste Ambassador Program, the garden supports food sovereignty, youth training, and zero-waste living while serving as a welcoming space for healing, cultural connection, and environmental stewardship. More than a garden, Kipohtakaw Seeds of Learning nurtures knowledge, resilience, and intergenerational relationships for a sustainable future.

Ciclomanias (Elizabeth) is a fabulous person to work with on any garden project. She worked with our students to teach them about composting and helped us apply for grants that successfully included a school garden. She is passionate about her love for gardening and that translates to the work she does with communities. I would work with Elizabeth time and time again for her expertise, kindness and respect for the inclusion of our Cree ways of knowing.
